Community West Bank Teaches Third Grade Students the Importance of Saving Money

Goleta, California – May 13, 2010: In conjunction with National Teach Children to Save Day, employees from Community West Bank visited 132 third grade students at Mary Buren Elementary School in Guadalupe (see attached photos).

Alicia Ashbrook, Vice President, Branch Manager and New Accounts Representative Katie Aguilar, showed students that by saving their money in a bank they can earn interest. This interactive exercise was a big hit with the students as they placed paper leaves, representing dollars, onto a large tree. The more leaves, the more their money was growing. Some students then took leaves off the tree to demonstrate that by saving their money they can afford to purchase items they need or want such as a computer or bicycle. In the end, each child was given a goodie bag with pencils, erasers, stickers and chocolate coins as well as a Savings Kit to start them on the road to saving.

“These children asked some great questions,” stated Ms. Ashbrook. “They are so bright.”

Sponsored by the American Bankers Association Education Foundation, National Teach Children to Save Day is an annual, nationwide event teaching children of all ages the importance of financial knowledge and saving for their future. Studies show that people who learn to save early in life usually make smarter financial decisions as adults.

Community West Bank is pleased to have participated in National Teach Children to Save Day and welcomes schools (grades: 3-12) to contact them for future presentations year-round.
